Application Modernization

Modernize what matters. Preserve what works.

Improve and transform existing applications without treating a complete rewrite as the default. We assess what is holding your software back, modernize where change creates value, and verify the result against agreed outcomes.

The challenge

Your application works. Changing it is the challenge.

Critical applications often accumulate dependencies, undocumented decisions and delivery practices that make even small changes expensive or risky. Aging runtimes, fragile integrations and limited test coverage can slow development while increasing operational exposure.

Modernization starts by understanding which parts of the system still serve the business and which constraints prevent it from evolving. The goal is not to replace everything. It is to make the next change safer and easier.

COMMON CONSTRAINTSSlow or unpredictable releasesOutdated dependencies and runtimesUndocumented business logicTightly coupled integrationsInsufficient tests and observability

Modernization options

Not every legacy application needs a rewrite.

We choose an approach from evidence, constraints and business priorities. Different parts of one application may require different interventions.

01

Improve

Retain the architecture

Reduce risk and friction through dependency upgrades, refactoring, automated tests, security improvements and delivery automation.

02

Transform

Change the architecture selectively

Modularize components, introduce APIs, update runtimes, replatform workloads or replace functionality incrementally.

03

Replace

Rebuild where justified

Define and deliver a replacement when maintaining or transforming the existing application is no longer the appropriate path.

Assessment determines the combination and sequence; no single strategy is prescribed in advance.

Engineering capabilities

From existing code to production readiness.

We work across application architecture, software delivery and the infrastructure the application depends on.

01

Understand

Establish how the application works, what it depends on and what must be preserved.

  • Architecture and dependency analysis
  • Business behavior and integration mapping
  • Code, delivery and operational risk review
02

Improve

Address maintainability, security and delivery friction without unnecessary architectural change.

  • Refactoring and dependency upgrades
  • Automated tests and quality controls
  • CI/CD and deployment improvements
03

Transform

Evolve application boundaries and runtime architecture where the benefits justify the change.

  • Modularization and API integration
  • Cloud and runtime modernization
  • Incremental replacement and data migration
04

Verify & transition

Check agreed outcomes and prepare the modernized system for real production use.

  • Functional and behavioral validation
  • Security, performance and resilience checks
  • Cutover, rollback and operational handover

A practical starting point

Know what to modernize before you commit.

Start with a separately scoped Application Modernization Assessment. We examine the current system, establish your objectives and identify viable options before proposing substantial implementation work.

ASSESSMENT / DELIVERABLES
01

Current-state picture

Architecture, dependencies, delivery practices and relevant operational constraints.

02

Risks and options

Modernization approaches, key trade-offs and areas requiring further investigation.

03

Prioritized direction

Recommended sequence of changes linked to agreed business and technical outcomes.

04

Next engagement

A candidate pilot or implementation scope with success criteria and an initial effort estimate.

Scope, duration and price are agreed individually. A pilot or implementation is a separate decision.

How we work

Start with evidence. Modernize incrementally.

The ape factory Method connects the initial problem to a verified production outcome. Discover establishes the baseline and success criteria; Verify checks the result against them. Operational findings inform what happens next.

  1. 01

    Discover

Understand behavior, dependencies, risks and measurable success criteria.

  2. 02

    Design

Select the modernization strategy, boundaries and transition plan.

  3. 03

    Build

Deliver improvements in manageable increments with automation where practical.

  4. 04

    Verify

Test behavior, security, performance and operability against agreed criteria.

  5. 05

    Operate

Hand over responsibly and use production feedback to guide further improvements.

One possible strategy

Change the system without replacing it all at once.

Incremental replacement can allow existing and modernized components to coexist while functionality moves through controlled transitions. We plan integration, data consistency, verification and rollback for the actual application rather than assuming one architecture fits every system.

Data and shared dependencies
Conceptual illustration of incremental replacement—not a prescribed architecture or a guarantee of zero disruption.

A deliberate gate

Change the technology. Verify the behavior.

A modern runtime or cleaner architecture is not proof of a successful modernization. We agree what must remain correct and what should improve, then collect evidence before production transition.

VERIFICATION EVIDENCE
Critical business workflows and expected behavior
Integration and data correctness
Security and dependency posture
Performance and resilience against agreed targets
Operational readiness, cutover and rollback

The verification plan is defined in Discover and refined as implementation risks become clearer.

AI-assisted engineering

AI accelerates the work. Engineering discipline governs the outcome.

AI can assist with understanding unfamiliar code, recovering documentation, suggesting tests and implementing bounded changes. Its output is reviewed, tested and verified by engineers; generated code is not evidence of correctness.

Your application

Built with you. Owned by you.

We work in your engineering environment wherever appropriate. Code, architecture decisions, automation, documentation and operational knowledge remain usable by your team. Modernization should reduce dependencies, not create a new dependency on Ape Factory.
