Kubernetes Community Days Munich 2024: Celebrating 10 Years of Kubernetes
A look back at Kubernetes Community Days Munich 2024, where ape factory returned as a Gold Sponsor, celebrated 10 years of Kubernetes, and marked the milestone with a custom anniversary-inspired T-shirt.

On 1–2 July 2024, the Kubernetes and cloud-native community came together at smartvillage Bogenhausen for another edition of Kubernetes Community Days Munich. Two days of presentations, technical exchange, and conversations brought engineers, platform teams, maintainers, and open-source enthusiasts into the same space.
For ape factory, the event marked our second consecutive year as a Gold Sponsor. After supporting KCD Munich in 2023, we were pleased to return and continue investing in the community behind the technologies we build and operate every day.
The 2024 edition was especially meaningful: Kubernetes turned 10. A decade after the project began in 2014, it had become a foundation of modern cloud-native infrastructure. We wanted to recognize that milestone in our own way—including a playful anniversary reference in our custom conference T-shirt.
Two Days of Engineering and Open Source
Kubernetes Community Days is more than a sequence of technical presentations. It is a place to compare approaches, share operational lessons, and connect with the people developing and running cloud-native systems in practice.
The 2024 program brought together perspectives from across the ecosystem, with topics spanning Kubernetes operations, platform engineering, infrastructure automation, security, and emerging technologies.
For us, the value of these discussions lies in connecting new ideas with the practical demands of production environments: reliability, maintainability, security, and the ability to evolve platforms without unnecessary lock-in.
Technical Themes Worth Revisiting
Platform Engineering and Better Developer Experiences
As Kubernetes platforms mature, the challenge is no longer simply making clusters available. Teams need repeatable workflows, useful abstractions, and clear operational boundaries.
Platform Engineering helps address that challenge by turning complex infrastructure capabilities into services that development teams can use consistently. The engineering work behind those services—identity, networking, observability, deployment automation, and lifecycle management—remains essential.
Security as an Operational Capability
Cloud-native security is not a one-time configuration exercise. It depends on continuously managing the software supply chain, workload permissions, runtime behavior, and the visibility needed to respond to incidents.
The 2024 conference program included security-related perspectives that remain relevant to anyone responsible for production Kubernetes environments.
Infrastructure Independence and Open Technologies
Open-source infrastructure offers opportunities to retain control over architecture and operations, but avoiding vendor lock-in requires deliberate decisions. Portability, interoperability, automation, and the ability to operate systems independently all matter.
These questions are especially important for organizations balancing cloud services, private infrastructure, and increasingly demanding sovereignty requirements.
Selected Conference Talks
A few recordings can give readers a closer look at the engineering discussions from the 2024 edition. Add two or three verified talks here, using the same conference-talk shortcode as in the 2025 and 2026 recaps.
Returning as a Gold Sponsor
Supporting Kubernetes Community Days Munich for a second year was a natural continuation of our involvement in the local cloud-native ecosystem.
For a company working with Kubernetes, OpenShift, DevOps, and production infrastructure, open-source communities are not separate from our engineering work. They are where knowledge is shared, assumptions are challenged, and better practices emerge.
Sponsorship is one way to help create space for those exchanges. Just as importantly, it is an opportunity to listen, learn, and connect with the people facing similar challenges across different organizations.
The People Behind the Technology
Some of the most useful conference moments happen away from the stage: a conversation after a session, a discussion over coffee, or an exchange about a problem another engineering team has already encountered.
That is what makes a community-organized event valuable. It brings together different experiences and perspectives in an environment where learning goes both ways.
Ten Years of Kubernetes — and a T-Shirt to Match
2024 marked Kubernetes’ tenth anniversary. From its origins in 2014 to its central role in modern infrastructure, Kubernetes has changed how teams deploy, scale, and operate applications. Its success is also a story of open-source collaboration: contributors, maintainers, operators, and users improving a shared platform over time.
For us, that anniversary deserved more than a passing mention. We created a custom KCD Munich 2024 T-shirt with a playful visual clin d’œil—a nod to Kubernetes’ tenth birthday.
The design brought together our ape factory identity, a little humor, and appreciation for a technology that has shaped so much of our engineering work. It was also part of a tradition we were building: creating a distinctive T-shirt for each Munich conference edition.
Beyond the anniversary design, the T-shirt represents something we value about community events: technical depth and professional exchange can coexist with creativity, personality, and a sense of fun.
A Tradition Taking Shape
Our second year as a Gold Sponsor helped establish what would become a recurring commitment to the Munich cloud-native community. The event, the conversations, and our annual T-shirt tradition would all continue to evolve—but the reason for participating stayed the same: supporting open technologies and the people who make them possible.
Looking Back, Looking Ahead
Kubernetes Community Days Munich 2024 was a celebration of both practical engineering and the community behind it. Ten years of Kubernetes offered a chance to appreciate how far the ecosystem had come—and to consider what the next decade of open infrastructure might bring. For ape factory, it was also another opportunity to support the local community, share experiences, and bring a little creativity to the occasion.
Thank you to the organizers, speakers, volunteers, sponsors, and everyone who helped make the event possible. We were glad to support another edition and look forward to continuing that commitment.
